It would be really great if someone would invent a new Internet with the specific purpose of not making money off of it, but making it what it originally was, a free marketplace of ideas, and there are still aspects of the Internet that are that. Wikipedia, essentially, is still the bastion of the original ideals of the Internet. –Todd Rundgren
There is a Wikipedia training tomorrow and you are all invited! The Utah State Library is hosting an online training on how to edit and build Wikipedia articles. In May I gave a presentation with Rebekah Cummings and Jessica Breiman about why it is important for librarians to use and contribute to Wikipedia. In short, because it is one of the most used information resources in the world and we can make it better as Information Professionals. As so eloquently stated by Todd Rundgren, Wikipedia is a bastion of open information and democratic knowledge, and we should contribute to that ideal
I have always viewed the mission of Wikipedia to be much bigger than just creating a killer website. We’re doing that of course, and having a lot of fun doing it, but a big part of what motivates us is our larger mission to affect the world in a positive way. –Jimmy Wales (co-founder of Wikipeda)
Wikipedia is about big ideas and important ideals. More importantly though, Wikipedia is about big ideas and important ideals that align with librarianship.
This is important to me because I use Wikipedia almost every day. I use it for quick reference and as a research starter. I use it as an amazing resource for teaching information literacy. It works so well for teaching because it feels comfortable to students. They use Wikipedia and I can use that to teach them necessary twenty-first century skills. I use Wikipedia to disseminate useful information and to correct incorrect ideas. I use Wikipedia, I contribute to Wikipedia, I love Wikipedia, and so should you.
The training is tomorrow at noon, and you will also be able to watch an archived version whenever you want. We will then be holding a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Marriott Library at the University of Utah on Thursday, September 3, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. This will be a great opportunity to use your new-found skills and help increase the presence of historical Utah women on Wikipedia. I will attach all relevant information below. Please join us and become a regular Wikipedia contributor.
